WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY INGROWN TOE NAILS?

HOW CAN THERE OCCURANCE BE PREVENTED?

Ingrown toe nail generally occurs due to any of the following two things: 

  1. Wearing too tight shoes.
  2.  Cutting nails too deep at edges. 

Prevention lies in avoid wearing too tight shoes. 

And avoid cutting nail edges too deep. 

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?

  1. If redness and swelling is there, a course of oral antibiotics and pain killer is prescribed by the dermatologist.
  2. Once the swelling subsides, lateral toe nail can be removed surgically under local anesthesia and the growth point of nail underneath the proximal nail fold is burnt with either laser or chemical. Thus the breath of nail is reduced. It was the excessive lateral growth of the nail digging into lateral nail fold leading to pain and swelling. Thus, reducing the excessive width would cure the problem.
